Owners Karl and Kim Merten welcome you to Café 225 California Bar and Grill . Chef Karl grew up in the San Francisco Bay area, and has brought his food experiences with him to Visalia. Chef Karl’s family has been in the restaurant business since 1959. His dad began working for Goldberg and Bowen Gourmet Grocer in San Francisco at their Sutter Street store as a Delicatessen Manager. In 1968 he opened The Gourmet Plate at 244 Battery Street. “I was 12 when my dad put me to work during the summer months cleaning tables, stocking shelves, slicing cheeses and meats and making sandwiches during the lunch rush. I pretty much knew and did everything except earn a paycheck. But I sure did eat well.”
“I learned that every customer in the restaurant is a guest in your home – a friend, a neighbor, or a member of the family who has come over for great food and a memorable time. And like family, no one should ever walk in without a warm greeting to be followed by the best meal they ever ate. After five more years of restaurant management my wife and I decided to open Café 225. I’m sure you will enjoy what comes out of our exposed kitchen and wood fired rotisserie & grill. “

As lead bartender and mixologist at Café 225. Tony has worked as a bartender since 1997, honing his bartending skills at Visalia’s fine dining restaurants. Tony brings a wealth of knowledge and passion for fresh ingredients and expertise in classic cocktails to our bar and tables. Ask for his Michalada or Mexi-Mule, two outstanding drinks in his repertoire.
